There are certain things you should not do in the UK.
- You should, as far as possible, not get into trouble if you are a foreign national because you might end up facing serious discipline.
- If you find yourself in a difficult situation try to walk a way. Do not ever hit someone unnecessarily, even if they hit you first. If you defend yourself and the other person gets hurt the police might interview you or you could find yourself in more serious trouble.
- Try to avoid drunken crowds because people can be quite disrespectful and discriminatory
- Don't comment on people's weight gain as some might find this very offensive
- Don't take girls home from clubs when they are drunk. Signals given by girls can be misinterpreted and you could be accused of rape and are likely to find end up in jail
- As in every other country: just be as pleasant and respectful as you already are
But there are also certain things you should do when in the UK. When you are a guest in a country you should try to adapt to their customs. Some things typical of the UK are:
- Wait in a queue
- Say "excuse me" if it is necessary to interrupt or if you disturb someone
- People say "sorry" even if there is nothing to be sorry for (don't do this in Germany; people might get irritated when you apologize constantly!)
- Try to make friends with people outside the army community
- Smile, be courteous and have good manners
As Fijians you are friendly, polite and caring anyway, so none of this should be a problem!
