It is very important to understand the cultural differences between Fijians and Europeans, especially when it comes to respect and care for each other.
Fijians grow up with a strong sense of community and usually come from large families. Family ties are extremely significant and from a young age Fijians know their place in the group and respect each other. Respect and care for others is an integral part of the culture and is highly valued. Different people call for higher levels of respect i.e. the chiefs or the elderly.
Money is also not as valued as it is here and often it is shared between members of the family. This demonstrates true concern for each other.
On the other hand, here in Europe the culture is generally more individualistic and people usually care more for themselves or for their immediate family, not the extended family. Money matters and accumulation of personal wealth is a priority for many. Respect for others is, perhaps, not as obvious as it is in Fiji. It is not uncommon to see people on the streets being disrespectful, such as children verbally abusing their mothers. School teachers often complain that pupils do not respect them and children are frequently afraid of speaking out against bullies while witnesses of such behaviour tend to ignore injustice rather than report it.
In contrast, it is in the roots of Fijian culture to help and care for each other.
Fijians are not renowned for causing fights but do not just accept it when they are disrespected by their fellow comrades, especially if these colleagues are drunk. Fijians are proud and as a result will get into a fight to uphold their dignity.
In Fiji, it is not the norm to swear and use abusive language. Here, in Europe, it is mostly accepted.
In this country, it is not seen as "taking it like a man" - if you cause harm to another individual you can expect to be charged and may find yourself in court or jail.
If you sense trouble WALK AWAY!
There is also a cultural difference when approaching European girls. You might receive signals that she wants to go home with you but I have heard stories such as a friend kissing a girl he met in a club. The girl went to the toilet and another man approached him and told him to be careful because she had already accused two men of attempted rape and the police were investigating it. Being accused of attempted rape or rape is a very serious issue. I am not saying that all girls are like this but just be AWARE.
There are many differences between Fijian and European culture. These are just a few that you may experience here in Europe. Do your research so that a lack of understanding isn't the cause for your dreams becoming a nightmare.
