Going to prison PDF Print E-mail
If your sentence is under 12 months you might be sent to the Military Correction and Training Centre (MCTC) in Colchester. Click here for more information about the MCTC.

You might be fortunate enough to be allowed back into the army after serving your sentence at MCTC.

Just remember that they are the ones who sent you to the MCTC in the first place!

If your sentence is over 12 months you will most likely go to a civilian prison and probably be kicked out of the army. How long you served in the army or the fact that you were willing to give your life for this country will subsequently become irrelevant - It will no longer count.

On arrival at the prison you will be classified as a Foreign National Prisoner. Click here to read more.

You will have to follow certain procedures in prison and this is not easy. It might take time to get settled and to organise visits from your spouse or friends who you might not have seen for some weeks, by this stage. To your advantage, your time in the army has probably given you strength to cope with your new situation. Try to work in prison or further your education; the main thing is to keep busy and not just stay locked up the whole day.

You might have the option to apply for Home Detention Curfew after serving half your sentence. This means that you will be released with a "tag" and are required to be home during certain times each day e.g. from 6.00 pm - 6.00 am. However, because you are a Foreign National, you will probably not be considered and will be required to serve your full sentence.
